California-bred Alert Bay scored his 14th career victory in 31 starts Saturday, taking his second consecutive Grade 3 San Francisco Mile at Golden Gate Fields in Albany, Calif.
Ridden by Juan Hernandez, the 6-year-old gelding by City Zip – racing for Peter Redekop BC Ltd. and trained by Blaine Wright – came from just off the pace to win by about 1 1/2 lengths. G.G. Ryder finished second, with pace-setter Many Roses third and Star Student fourth in the field of six older turf runners.
Alert Bay, the 3-5 favorite, covered one mile on firm turf in 1:35.12.
Hernandez put Alert Bay just behind Many Roses, who set moderate fractions of :23.81, :47.71 and 1:12.17 for the opening six furlongs. G.G. Ryder came up to challenge to the frontrunner’s inside and Alert Bay to the outside as the trio rounded into the stretch, but Alert Bay proved best down the lane.
Alert Bay is coming off a victory April 2 in a one-mile allowance race on the Tapeta synthetic surface, his first start since finishing fourth in the G3 Longacres Mile Handicap at Emerald Downs last August.
