What a stunning story – nearly 12 months after collapsing in the National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and on the brink of losing his life, Edwulf lands the Unibet Irish Gold Cup in remarkable style for trainert Joseph O’Brien, jockey Derek O’Connor and owner JP McManus in one of the highlights of the inaugural Dublin Racing Festival.
“It’s a credit to everyone involved – the staff at home, the vets at Cheltenham last year and JP and Frank Berry who gave Edwulf all the time in the world,” said O’Brien.
“It’s been a long road to get him back from where he was at Cheltenham when we thought he was gone.
“Derek is an unbelievable horseman. Horses just jump unbelievably well for him and he gets on great with this fella. We’re over the moon.”
Joseph O’Brien has barely had his trainers’ licence for 18 months – he’s now won two Grade 1 events at the first-ever Dublin Racing Festival, the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes on the Flat and the Melbourne Cup!
In a dramatic conclusion to the race, we’re delighted to say all horses and riders got to the feet and were reported fine after the race.
