Pamela Ziebarth’s homebred Ambitious Brew was strong in Friday’s first division of the Grade 3 Eddie D Stakes, rallying down the lane to win by two lengths. The 6-year-old son of Tizbud, ridden by Mike Smith, covered the approximately 6 1/2 furlongs of Santa Anita’s downhill turf course in 1:11.57 for trainer Martin Jones.
Making his turf debut, Justin Squared was very quick out of the gates to take an immediate lead, speeding through a first quarter in :21.79. Tracked by La Berma and Richard’s Boy, Justin Squared held a comfortable one-length advantage early on. Ambitious Brew was fourth early on the outside, with the favored Lady Shipman traveling in fifth. Through the second quarter over the steepest part of the course, Justin Squared extended his lead to two lengths, speeding through the half-mile in :43.86 as La Berma dropped back. Richard’s Boy moved into second, with Ambitious Bred tracking his move from the outside.
Crossing over the dirt and straightening out into the homestretch, Richard’s Boy took over the lead in convincing fashion, but Ambitious Brew was glued to his flank. Lady Shipman looked as though she would make a rally, but tired in early stretch and began to fade. Meanwhile, Ambitious Brew and Smith kept grinding away at the leader, and were able to get past him with a sixteenth to go. In the final stages, Ambitious Brew extended his lead to cross under the wire nearly two lengths in front of Richard’s Boy. Hunt made up ground from the rear to finish third, and Clever Royal was fourth.
Bred in California, Ambitious Brew was winning his first graded stakes in the Eddie D. The gelding improved his overall record to seven wins from 20 starts, with earnings of just under $ 500,000.
