American Pharoah’s Baby Brother ‘Pretty Impressive’ In Maiden-Breaking Effort At Del Mar

American Pharoah fans have a new face to root for: the Triple Crown champion’s full brother is now a winner at Del Mar. Owned by Mrs. John Magnier, the 2-year-old St Patrick’s Day contested the pace on the inside, then dug in late to hold off Instilled Regard, a $ 1.05 million OBS purchase, by a half-length at the wire. Trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Flavien Prat, St Patrick’s Day completed the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:17.81.

“He was pretty impressive,” Baffert told bloodhorse.com. “He was in (post 1) and had to take a lot of heat early. (Inside) like that, you have to ask them and he went really fast early, but he was gutting it out at the end. The horse who ran second—he’s a good horse. It was a tough maiden race. There was a lot of cash in there—a lot of horses you’re going to hear about down the line.”

The victory came in St. Patrick’s Day’s second career start; in his first outing, the colt was defeated 1 1/2 lengths by stablemate Zatter. Baffert plans to point the Pioneerof the Nile-Littleprincessemma colt to the 1 1/16-mile G1 Frontrunner Stakes at Santa Anita on Sept. 30. American Pharoah won the race in 2014.

Bred in Kentucky by Jan Lyon’s Summer Wind Farm, the colt was sold privately in 2016 when he was named Irish Pharaoh. Full brother American Pharoah was bred and raced by Ahmed Zayat, but the horses’ dam, Littleprincessemma, went through the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Mixed Sale in 2014, bringing $ 2.1 million when the future Triple Crown winner had just begun to demonstrate his ability with a pair of Grade 1 wins as a juvenile.
