Apple’s Jade – Squared Financial Christmas Hurdle (2017)

What a finish! Apple’s Jade does it again – the superstar mare is a winner on her first attempt at three miles in the Grade 1 Squared Financial Christmas Hurdle under jockey Davy Russell for trainer Gordon Elliott and owner Gigginstown House Stud.

It’s very hard to believe this mare is only five, yet she is already a seven-time Grade 1 winner – and at two miles, two and half miles and now at three. She’s never finished out of the first two in 14 starts!

The race was marred by the very sad incident involving Nichols Canyon, who suffered a fatal fall. The only horse to beat Faugheen, the gelding was the winner of eight top-level contests, victorious at the Cheltenham, Aintree and Punchestown Festivals and still only seven. Our thoughts go out to trainer Willie Mullins and his staff and owners Andrea and Graham Wylie.
