B. Wayne Hughes’ Beholder was the facile two-length winner of Saturday’s Grade 1 Vanity Mile, defeating Eclipse Award winner Stellar Wind in 1:35.97 over a mile on Santa Anita’s fast main track. The 6-year-old daughter of Henny Hughes has now won a Grade 1 race each year for the past five years for trainer Richard Mandella.

Breaking sharply under regular rider Gary Stevens, Beholder was happy to concede the early lead to Lost Bus. The three-time Eclipse Awarad-winning Beholder kept close tabs on the leader along the outside through surprisingly slow fractions of :25.03 and :49.31, staying within a half-length of Lost Bus.
