Al and Saundra Kirkwood’s homebred Blackjackcat held firm in the lane to win Sunday’s Grade 2 Del Mar Mile, besting Vyjack by a head at the wire. The 4-year-old son of Tale of the Cat marked his first graded win and third victory in a row under the guidance of jockey Kent Desormeaux. Trained by Mark Glatt, he covered a mile on the firm turf in 1:34.06.
Midnight Storm took the lead out of the gate, hounded by Blackjackcat through fractions of :23.16 and :46.88. The entire six-horse field was covered by less than five lengths, and Blackjackcat came up to challenge Midnight Storm at the head of the lane.
Blackjackcat put away Midnight Storm by mid-stretch, by both Vyjack and Om were making a big run down the outside. Blackjackcat had just enough in the tank to hold on for a victory by a head, with Vyjack coming up just short. Om finished third, and Midnight Storm faded to fourth.
Bred in Kentucky, Blackjackcat is out of the multiple stakes winning Go for Gin mare Bootleg Annie. The gelding has now won his last three consecutive starts, and boasts four wins from 13 starts overall. The Del Mar Mile is his first graded victory, and improves Blackjackcat’s earnings to over $ 350,000.
