Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Gimcrack Stakes (Group 2), 6f, 2y0 colts and geldings
BLUE POINT emphatically confirmed his reputation as one of the best two-year-olds of this campaign by breezing to an easy win in the Gimcrack Stakes.
The son of Shamardal, owned by Godolphin, was cut to a best priced 10-1 for the Qipco 2,000 Guineas in the aftermath of the win, behind the Aidan O’Brien-trained duo of Caravaggio and Churchill.
Tracking the leaders in the opening stages, Blue Point was always travelling well, and when Buick pressed him for an effort the colt responded in devastating style, beating Mokarris by three lengths, who himself pulled clear of The Last Lion in third.
Doubt over stamina for a mile
Trainer Charlie Appleby was impressed with the manner of the victory, however cast doubt on whether he could stay the Guineas trip of a mile.
Appleby said: “William (Buick, jockey) came back in and said they couldn’t go fast enough for him.
“We’ll speak to John and His Highness but I’d be tempted to go straight to the Middle Park. I’d love to say he’d stay a mile but it doesn’t look like it at the moment.”
