France: Pierre-Charles Boudot has broken Christophe Soumillon’s French record for the number of winners in a season with 11 weeks to spare.
Having ridden a five-timer on Saturday to draw level on 228 wins for the year, Boudot only had to wait until the second race on Sunday at Chantilly before recording a smooth success aboard the David Smaga-trained Saphirside.
23-year-old Boudot, who shared the championship in 2015 with Soumillon and is a yawning 90 wins clear in the race to be Cravache d’Or this year, says he is now focussed on overhauling the European record of 273 victories, set by Peter Schiergen back in 1995.
“It is very satisfying because I have been recording good results for a few years now and to beat the record was a great challenge,” said Boudot, who has traversed the country in search of winning opportunities, aided by the relentless efforts of agent Herve Naggar.
“Now I am chasing the European record of Peter Scheirgen and I hope I can keep up the same rhythm until the end of the year with a hope of getting close to it and maybe passing it.
“I have had 273 in my sights for several months and so to get to the French record by October 16 is very important in our quest to get there.”
