Hall of Fame mare Zenyatta won 19 consecutive races in her career. This Saturday, Australian super-mare Winx tied that record with a win in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes at Royal Randwick. The daughter of Street Cry broke well, far better than in her last outing, but was still three lengths behind with 200 meters to race. At 100 meters she was still two lengths short, but she closed with a mighty rush to reel in challenger Red Excitement in the final strides.
“When she hit the afterburners at the 150-metres mark I can’t explain the feeling,” jockey Hugh Bowman told abc.net.au. “What she did today is just incredible. Everything that she does is incredible. I’m lost for words.”
Black Caviar was another Australian racemare, undefeated in 25 career starts.
“Black Caviar was unbeaten, that’s just amazing how she did that I do not know,” said Winx’s trainer Chris Waller. “Winx has her own history with Cox Plates and so many races, whatever happens is a bonus, she’s our darling and she’s done all she needs to do.”
Plans for Winx call for her to continue on to the Group 1 George Main Stakes.
