GODOLPHIN are without Toormore but can still find three candidates to try to maintain the team’s hold on Goodwood’s newest Group race.
Toormore, successful in the race last year and second in 2014, tackles the Qatar Sussex Stakes on Wednesday but in Home Of The Brave, Dutch Connection and Birchwood, Godolphin could still sweep the board.
Home Of The Brave has been beaten only once over the trip and that was when he was disqualified from a race in Ireland after testing positive for a banned substance.
Dutch Connection finished second in the race a year ago and was second in the Summer Mile last time out while Birchwood, who met trouble in running when fifth in the Vintage Stakes a year ago, comes here off the back of a Chester Listed win.
‘The right race for him’
However, Home Of The Brave’s trainer Hugo Palmer also saddles Gifted Master, a Group 3 winner over 6f who failed to cope with soft ground in the Jersey Stakes last time.
Palmer said: “It’s slightly frustrating to be running them against each other but they have different owners. The July Cup was considered for Home Of The Brave, but he has always looked best over seven furlongs – I’ve no doubt this is the right race for him.
“They are front-running types but won’t both be able to lead. Gifted Master didn’t like the ground that soft at Ascot. They are both well balanced, so I hope the track won’t be a problem for them.”
Course in ‘good shape’
Clerk of the course Seamus Buckley: “The track is in good shape – it’s been tremendous hard work to maintain in the last week. We’ve had a heatwave in the South with temperatures reaching 36/37C so we’ve been working overnight on the track. It’s been drying out very quickly so it’s great to have good ground today. We expect it to be dry today though the forecast suggests there will be a little rain tomorrow, but hopefully not too much.”
