By the Moon pulls away from Pretty N Cool to win the G3 Vagrancy Hdcp.
By the Moon put away heavily-favored Pretty N Cool to win the G3 Vagrancy Handicap at Belmont Park May 5.
The 5-year-old mare by Indian Charlie returned to the winner’s circle for the first time since June 2016, when she captured the G3 Bed O’ Roses Handicap.
By the Moon broke alertly under jockey Rajiv Maragh, and the pair went up to duel for the lead with favored Pretty N Cool. The pair dueled through a swift opening quarter-mile in 22.57, with a half in 45.35.
By the Moon and Pretty N Cool continued to match strides as they swept through the far turn and hit the top of the stretch. It was at that point that By the Moon shook off her rival and began to pull away, eventually crossing the wire 1 3/4-lengths in front.
Pretty N Cool finished second, with Quezon third. Final time for the 6 1/2-furlong contest was 1:17.44 over a sloppy and sealed main track.
Bred in Kentucky by Samantha Siegal, By the Moon races as a homebred for Jay Em Ess Stable. By the Moon is out of By the Light, a multiple stakes-winning daughter of Malibu Moon.
