California Chrome, shown winning the Pacific Classic.
Leading North American money-earner California Chrome recorded his first breeze since his Pacific Classic victory Saturday morning at Los Alamitos, rolling through a half-mile in :48 4/5, and galloping out in 1:02 4/5.
“It was a very good maintenance work, he was just breezing,” trainer Art Sherman told the Los Alamitos publicity department. “We’re right on schedule. Next week we’ll go an easy five-eighths with him, and by the time the Awesome Again comes around we’ll be ready to run.”
California Chrome has been pointed to the G1 Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita on Oct. 1, a “Win and You’re In” event for the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Those two races, along with the Pacific Classic, offer a $ 1 million “California bonus” to the horse that can win all three, sponsored by Del Mar and the Stronach Group.
