Cathryn Sophia hasn’t raced since finishing third in the G1 Acorn on June 11, but the 3-year-old daughter of Street Boss seriously impressed top jockey Javier Castellano with a Tuesday morning workout at Saratoga.
“That’s scary,” Castellano told the Daily Racing Form after dismounting. Cathryn Sophia breezed six furlongs in 1:15.00, with splits of 12.90 seconds, 25.40, and 37.58. Galloping out, the Kentucky Oaks winner marked seven furlongs in 1:26.78 and a mile in 1:39.90. Castellano said that riding her through the far turn was similar to a “rollercoaster” on a sharp bend: “that’s what it felt like, you go into the turn ‘Wee, I’m going fast.’ It felt so good, with the wind in my face.”
Trainer John Servis was also pleased, though he says that the filly always impresses in her works. She will be pointed for the $ 150,000 Princess of Sylmar Stakes at Parx Racing on Sept. 3 for her next start, with the main goal being the G1 Cotillion there on Sept. 24.
