Champion Juvenile Churchill Completes Classic Double; Thunder Snow Second

Last year’s champion 2-year-old continued his dominance on the European circuit with a 2 1/2-length win in Saturday’s Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh, completing a classic double with the Newmarket equivalent already on his resume. The Aidan O’Brien-trained Churchill, who gave the trainer his fourth dual-classic winner, was partnered by Ryan Moore, laying off the pace early and storming home in the center of the one mile course over good turf in 1:39.12. Godolphin’s Thunder Snow made a strong challenge in the final furlong but had to settle for second.

“He’s been a pleasure to ride from day one,” said Moore. “When I asked him, he picked up Christophe (Soumillon, on Thunder Snow) a lot quicker than I expected him to. I should know better by now. I think he’s a very talented horse.”

Owned by the Coolmore partners, Churchill is a son of super-sire Galileo, out of an Irish-bred daughter of Storm Cat. He has now won seven of his eight career starts, including four Group 1 victories.
