Champion Tepin, who is undefeated in five starts this year, will not race in the G2 Ballston Spa Aug. 27.
In an interview with the Daily Racing Form on Tuesday, trainer Mark Casse said that his star turf mare will instead make her next start in the G1 Woodbine Mile Sept. 17.
Casse wasn’t pleased with the way Tepin had been training after she first arrived at Saratoga. Although Casse has been happier with Tepin lately, he told the Form that he and his son Norman felt that “trying to rush her back, maybe we did too much too quick.”
Tepin hasn’t worked since she breezed a half-mile at Saratoga July 22. Casse indicated that Tepin will likely work this weekend over the Oklahoma turf course. She will remain at Saratoga until Casse begins shipping horses back to Churchill Downs later in August.
“She will get ready at Churchill where she’s had success getting ready,” Casse said. “She’ll ship a day or two ahead just like she’s done for everything else.”
