LIMATO did what the likes of So Mi Dar, Postponed and Mecca’s Angel could not and justified favouritism on Arc day.
On a day of upsets, Henry Candy’s superstar gelding never looked in danger, powering clear with such authority his rider Harry Bentley was afforded plenty of time to celebrate before crossing the line.
It was a second Group 1 win of the year for the four-year-old, who added a length and three-quarter success over 7f in the Foret to his two-length victory in Newmarket’s July Cup over six. He was trimmed to 6-4 favourite (from 5-2) by Paddy Power to add a third in next month’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint.
Bentley got the perfect run on the 8-11 favourite, who was beaten when sent off at even-money in the race last year. Settled behind the pacesetter Karar on the rail, Bentley eased out off the bend and then waited, sitting motionless as all around him were at work. When the afterburners were finally turned on the result was devastating.
