Claim To Fame: Cal-Bred Skye Diamonds Keeps Rolling For Rancho Bernardo Victory

Skye Diamonds and jockey Tiago Pereira win the Grade III, $ 100,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap

Allen Racing, Bloom Racing, Tom Acker and Jon Lindo’s Skye Diamonds proved a deserved favorite in Sunday’s Grade 3 Rancho Bernardo Handicap, rallying through the stretch to defeat Constellation by 1 1/4 lengths. A 4-year-old daughter of First Dude, ridden by Tiago Periera for trainer William Spawr, Skye Diamonds covered 6 1/2 furlongs over Del Mar’s fast main track in 1:15.95.

Constellation was quick of the gate, but Rockport Babe came up the rail to take over the lead leaving the chute. Rockport Babe led by a length through a first quarter in :22.46, tracked by Constellation on the outside and trailed by Skye Diamonds against the rail. Constellation began to encroach on the lead, cutting it to half a length entering the far turn, and took over the front-running position after a half mile in :45.26.

Skye Diamonds had to wait for racing room after saving ground around the turn, and Constellation got out to a one-length lead at the head of the lane. When Periera gave Skye Diamonds the cue, she came rallying down the center of the track to overwhelm Constellation in the final eighth of a mile. Skye Diamonds continued to pull away, crossing the wire about 1 1/4 lengths in front of Constellation. Bendable got up for third after trailing early, and Munny Spunt checked in fourth.

Bred in California by Dizney Double Diamond, Skye Diamonds began her career in the colors of breeder Donald Dizney. Spawr dropped a claim on the filly for $ 40,000 in August of 2016, and she rewarded her new connections with a win first out for a $ 50,000 tag. In fact, Skye Diamonds hasn’t finished worse than second since Spawr claimed her, and has now added a second graded stakes win to her name. Overall, the filly boasts a record of nine wins and four seconds from 16 starts for earnings of over $ 500,000.
