Fair to say a big-race surprise, but what a way to do it – faiththful servant Clarcam lands thetote.com Galway Plate in fine style under jockey Mark Enright for trainer Gordon Elliott and owners Gigginstown House Stud.
Elliott had four runners in the race and Gigginstown six, and Clarcam was the most unheralded of those at 33/1, yet the seven-year-old was having a great time out in front under an inspired ride from Enright and the classy operator was not for catching.
Twice a Grade 1 winner over fences in his youth, Clarcam has now won 10 races for Elliott and Gigginstown is now a Galway Plate winner with career earnings of €450,000 after a memorable triumph in the big summer chasing highlight.
This is the biggest day in the career of Enright, now freelancing and not accustomed to many fancied rides at the top table. “I don’t win big races!” said the jockey after crossing the line for a victory he won’t forget in a hurry…
