HUGO PALMER has confirmed Galileo Gold will race on next year after owners Al Shaqab Racing decided to keep the Qipco 2,000 Guineas hero in training as a four-year-old.

Galileo Gold proved his lofty standing in the Classic generation by gaining a second Group 1 success of the season in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He finished second in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and Sussex Stakes before failing to make his mark when well beaten on his last two starts in the Prix Jacques le Marois in August and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on Saturday.

“He stays in training, which is great,” said Palmer on Monday. “I had a message yesterday afternoon that the owners wanted to keep him in training.

“I don’t think he would have won whatever happened on Saturday the way he ran. He tried very hard and he is very brave which is probably why he finished as close as he did. Frankie [Dettori] said he felt like a horse that had had enough for the year.”

Palmer said the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes and Qatar Sussex Stakes were likely to feature on his programme but the Dubai Turf on World Cup night would also be considered.
