JAN FALTEJSEK, well known to viewers in Britain through his long-standing association with Knockara Beau, won the Velka Pardubicka for the fourth time as he partnered Charme Look to an authoritative victory.
Chaos often ensues in the Velka Pardubicka, which is run over 4m2½f and includes a variety of fearsome-looking obstacles, but backers of favourite Charme Look would have been on good terms with themselves throughout as Faltejsek had the Pardubice specialist prominently positioned in a race run at a moderate tempo.
The talented Rabbit Well, who has refused to race on several occasions, was not on his best behaviour and sent rider Josef Vana tumbling to the turf shortly after the start, while the infamous Taxis, one of the most difficult jumping tests on the course, took the measure of Reaper and Nikas.
There was less chaos than is often the case – no doubt partly due to the slow early gallop – and most of the remaining 12 runners still held a chance as the pace quickened inside the final half mile.
Ange Guardian tried to throw down a challenge to Charme Look after the last but couldn’t keep tabs with the leader, who forged clear under Faltejsek to win with plenty in hand. Zarif finshed third.
Faltejsek had previously won the race on Padubicka legend Orphee Des Blins three times in succession between 2012 and 2014.
