AIDAN O’BRIEN has nominated the Coral-Eclipse Stakes as the next likely target for Deauville, who weakened in the closing stages when 11th in the Derby.
Deauville had previously finished a fine second in the Dante to Wings Of Desire on his reappearance and was widely cut for the Sandown Group 1 a week on Saturday after news on Monday that the race was his probable aim, the Eclipse sponsor quoting a top-priced 20-1 (from 25) on Monday night.
Paddy Power, however, quoted just 10-1, as did Betfair Sportsbook, with the market headed by Time Test at 4-1.
O’Brien said: “It looked as if Deauville didn’t stay the distance at Epsom so he won’t be running in the Irish Derby on Saturday. We’re going to drop him back in trip, probably in the Eclipse. He wants good or faster ground.”
O’Brien, who was entertaining the media at Ballydoyle, also commented on the likely destination of several other of his charges in the aftermath of Royal Ascot.
The Gurkha heading for Goodwood
The Qatar Sussex Stakes looks the objective for St James’s Palace Stakes runner-up The Gurkha.
“He’s come out of Ascot well,” he reported. “We don’t feel the need to step him up in trip, certainly at this stage, and Goodwood is the plan.”
The Ghurka is 3-1 second favourite for the July 27 Goodwood Group 1 behind St James’s Palace winner Galileo Gold, who enjoyed a smoother run at the royal meeting.
