Bolstered by a series of additions around the inaugural running of the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar, the seaside track will offer a record fall stakes schedule worth $ 3,375,000 when racing begins on Wednesday, November 1.
Twenty-two stakes in total will be presented during the 16-day session with seven of them “undercard” races for the two Breeders’ Cup days, Friday, November 3 and Saturday, November 4.
Twelve of the 22 main events are graded races with a pair of those Grade I, four presented at Grade II and six at Grade III. The Grade I stakes – the $ 300,000 Hollywood Derby and the $ 300,000 Matriarch Stakes — will lead three-stake programs on closing weekend, Saturday, November 25 (Hollywood Derby) and Sunday, November 26 (Matriarch).
Last fall the track held 14 stakes worth $ 2.05 million.
Friday’s Breeders’ Cup card – featuring four BC races — will be supplemented by a quartet of Del Mar stakes: the $ 200,000 Damascus Stakes for 3 & up at 7 furlongs; the $ 200,000 Golden State Juvenile Fillies Stakes for 2-y-o Cal-bred fillies at 7 furlongs; the Grade III, $ 150,000 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes for 3 & up, fillies & mares at 5 furlongs on turf; and the Grade II, $ 200,000 Marathon Stakes for 3 & up at 1-3/4 miles.
Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup program – where nine BC races will be held – has three additional Del Mar stakes: the Grade II, $ 200,000 Goldikova Stakes for 3 & up, fillies & mares at 1 mile on turf; the $ 200,000 Golden State Juvenile Stakes for 2-y-o Cal-breds at 7 furlongs; and the $ 200,000 QREC Juvenile Turf Sprint for 2-y-os at 5 furlongs on turf.
The 2017 schedule will welcome the return of the $ 100,000 Desi Arnaz Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at seven furlongs, a race that was run during the track’s first two fall sessions, but was not offered for the 2016 meet. The sprint will be run on Saturday, November 18.
The track’s November 23 early Thanksgiving Day card – starting at 11 a.m. – will feature the Grade III, $ 100,000 Red Carpet Stakes for 3-year-old and up fillies and mares at 11 furlongs on the turf.
Thanksgiving Friday’s program will be highlighted by Grade II, $ 200,000 Hollywood Turf Cup for 3-year-olds and up at a 1-1/2 miles on the turf.
A trio of overnight stakes – each carrying a $ 75,000 purse – is part of the rich stakes program. The overnights are the Let It Ride Stakes for 3-y-os at 1 mile on turf on opening day, November 1; the Lure Stakes for 3 & up at 1 mile on turf on November 2, and the Fast Parade Stakes for 3 & up at 5 furlongs on turf on November 5.
