INVESTEC DERBY winner Harzand features among nine declarations for Saturday’s Irish equivalent at the Curragh.

Dermot Weld had raised concerns about Saturday’s race possibly coming too soon for Harzand, who was treated with a course of antibiotics after sustaining an injury in the lead-up to the Derby, but he has declared his Classic winner.

Epsom second US Army Ranger – who was ruled out due to an unsatisfactory scope – and stablemate Sword Fighter were the only two defectors from the 11 involved at the confirmation stage.

O’Brien challenge

Aidan O’Brien has won the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby eight times in the past ten years and he is responsible for four of the nine-runner field.

Idaho, who finished two and a quarter lengths behind Harzand in third at Epsom, spearheads the O’Brien challenge and is the 9-4 second favourite with Paddy Power, who make Harzand a 4-5 chance to confirm the Derby form and bag a second Classic.

Port Douglas and Shogun – who also ran at Epsom – are joined by Claudio Monteverdi in completing the O’Brien challenge.

The Ed Dunlop-trained Red Verdon is the only British challenger, while Jim Bolger, who won the race three years ago with Trading Leather, is doubly represented by Moonlight Magic and Stellar Mass.

Ebediyin, a stablemate of Harzand, completes the line-up.
