Mastery wins the Los Alamitos Futurity

Cheyenne Stable’s colt Mastery proved that stretching out to two turns for the first time was not an issue, driving away from longshot Irap in the stretch to win the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Cash Call Futurity by nearly five lengths. The 2-year-old son of Candy Ride pressed a solid pace early on, then was challenged at the head of the lane. When jockey Mike Smith asked the colt he responded enthusiastically, galloping away from his rivals to stop the clock in 1:41.56 over the fast main track, just three-fifths of a second off the track record. Mastery’s win gave trainer Bob Baffert his ninth victory in the Futurity, and the undefeated colt earned 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
