IT WAS business as usual at Brian Ellison’s yard the morning after the night before when the trainer reached the 1,000-winner milestone.

Such is the progress the yard has made, developing into one of the biggest and most successful dual purpose operations from humble beginnings in 1989, Ellison had seven runners at three different tracks to organise on Saturday morning.

“It’s been a long journey getting here,” said the trainer, whose 1,000th winner came courtesy of Robero at Newmarket on Friday night.

“Things have picked up a lot in the last few years and I’ve got a great team behind me. My daughter Jessica and wife are very supportive and it’s great that we’ve got there.

“I never gave something like this a thought. We were having one winner a season, five winners a season. The wife just reminded me that in 1999 we had 20 winners, which was our best season ever, and we had a party!”

With 37 on the Flat already this year and a further 20 over jumps since the start of 2016, Ellison has put those days firmly behind him.

“It’s been a lot of grafting, we’ve got good staff and things have got better each year, plus I’ve got some really good owners at the moment,” he added.

“Looking ahead, it would be nice to go to the Melbourne Cup, and we have some very nice jumpers coming back in. Definitly Red is a very good horse, so I am keen to see what they can achieve.”
