EVEN SONG will spearhead Aidan O’Brien’s attack on the Darley Irish Oaks at the Curragh on Saturday week, with Minding waiting for the Qatar Nassau Stakes at Goodwood on July 30.
O’Brien has won the Irish Oaks four times, most recently with Bracelet in 2014, and Even Song has been given the go-ahead to lead his challenge this year following her success in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot.
“We will probably wait for the Nassau with Minding,” said O’Brien. “That is the way I am thinking at the moment so Even Song will go for the Irish Oaks.”
He added: “Even Song won nicely at Ascot and you have to remember that it was only her second run of the season so I was very pleased with what she did there. We gave her a little break after Ascot and she seems in good form now so we will head to the Curragh with her.”
Even Song is a best-priced 11-10 with bet365 for the Irish Oaks but is as short as 4-7 with BoyleSports. Minding is 5-4 with bet365 to win her sixth Group 1 in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood but odds-on with Paddy Power and BetVictor.
German Derby mission
O’Brien will also attempt to win a first German Derby at Hamburg on Sunday as connections have stumped up €65,000 to supplement Landofhopeandglory.
The son of High Chaparral was fourth in the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot behind Sword Fighter before succumbing to the same stablemate in the Group 2 Curragh Cup last month.
“We have supplemented Landofhopeandglory for the German Derby,” said O’Brien.
“I have never won it before and it would be a lovely race to win. He has been busy this year but he seems in good form and we have decided that it was the right type of race for him. I have been happy with him since his run at the Curragh.”
