Bar One Drinmore Novice Chase (Grade 1) 2m4f, 4yo+

GIGGINSTOWN HOUSE STUD had dominated the Drinmore Novice’ Chase in recent years, but it was Ireland’s other leading owner JP McManus who was smiling after Coney Island led home a green and gold one-two at Fairyhouse on Sunday.

The €85,000 Grade 1 has had a maroon hue in four of the last five years after Gigginstown wins for Bog Warrior, Don Cossack, Valseur Lido and No More Heroes, and the operation’s supremo Michael O’Leary was keen for more success, fielding four of the seven runners.

But the best they could muster was Alpha Des Obeaux’s third behind the McManus-owned Coney Island and Anibale Fly, whose rider Barry Geraghty carried the first-choice silks.

His decision to ride Anibale Fly meant Mark Walsh was aboard the 8-1 winner, who was one of five in with a chance jumping the last, but left his rivals for dead when quickening clear.

He is 8-1 (from 25) with Paddy Power for the RSA Chase at Cheltenham in March and was providing Walsh and trainer Edward Harty’s with their first Drinmore victory.
