Family Tree repelled the challenge of Ready to Confess and pulled away in the stretch to win the G3 Iowa Oaks at Prairie Meadows by two lengths June 30.
It was the first stakes victory for the 3-year-old daughter of Smart Strike, who improved her record to 3-2-2 in eight career starts.
A field of 10 fillies went to the post in the Iowa Oaks, with the Todd Pletcher-trained Thrilled going off as the 8-5 favorite.
Ridden patiently by jockey Florent Geroux, Family Tree was settled just off the leaders in third through the early stages of the race. Family Tree swept past the front runners to take the lead on the far turn, and had plenty left in the tank to hold off the late challenge of Ready to Confess to win comfortably.
Put Da Blame On Me got up for third, with 104-1 longshot For All The Grands finishing in fourth. Final time for the 1 1/16-mile contest was 1:43.25 over a ‘good’ main track.
Family Tree was bred in Kentucky by Dell Ridge Farm and Sam-Son Farm. She is out of the stakes-winning mare, Giant Mover, by Giant’s Causeway.
