A field of 16 is set to contest the Group 1 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Sunday with favorite Postponed drawing an ideal spot in stall seven.
The Roger Varian-trained Postponed is gunning for his fifth straight stakes win, while also attempting to remain undefeated this year. Jockey Andrea Atzeni will once again be in the saddle.
Makahiki will try to give Japan its first victor in the Arc. The son of Deep Impact won the Group 1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) in May, and most recently captured the Group 2 Prix Niel at Chantilly earlier this month. The colt is currently the second-favorite with the oddsmakers, who increased his odds slightly after the colt drew outside in stall 14.
Frankie Dettori will try to capture his fifth Arc with Order of St George, one of three runners that will be sent out by trainer Aidan O’Brien. It will also mark the first time that Dettori has ridden for the master of Ballydoyle since piloting Camelot in the 2012 Arc.
Earlier this week it looked as though Dettori would not have a mount in the Arc after the Dermot Weld-trained Fascinating Rock was withdrawn from consideration.
“I’m every bit as thrilled as I was when I rode Camelot,” Dettori said in his blog post for Ladbrokes on Thursday. “I was getting a bit anxious that I might miss out on an Arc ride, so I am delighted that Aidan has asked me to ride for him again.”
