Deauville: Shadwell Prix de Pomone (Group 2) 1m4½f, 3y0+ fillies and mares

Highlands Queen (Yohann Gourraud/Stephane Pasquier) made her connections forget all thoughts of a troubled attempt at the Prix de Diane Longines with a classy performance.

William Buick was given a 30-day ban by Chantilly stewards having been found guilty of causing the interference that caused Amandine to fall in the Diane.

Regular pilot Pasquier – who had opted to ride The Juliet Rose at Chantilly – was back aboard for this first try at an extended mile and a half and rode a patient race before striking as the field fanned out across the straight.

Mango Tango and Louis-Philippe Beuzelin stayed on best of the rest to be second.

Highlands Queen was Gourraud’s first Group 3 winner when landing the Prix Cleopatre in May and again broke new ground for the yard here.

“She ran well to be eighth having been knocked about in the Prix de Diane but I felt a certain pressure today,” said Gourraud. “She was up in trip and it is faster ground so there was plenty to worry about.

“What happened on the day at Chantilly didn’t spoil the experience for me and she has shown how good she is in the morning since. Now she has won this I have no hesitation in going to the Vermeille, while she is also in the Ascot Champions Fillies’ and Mares’ in October if all goes well.”
