THE William Haggas-trained Forever Popular takes a step up in class on a trip to France today following victory in a Listed contest at Newmarket last time out.
The Lael-owned filly won by three-quarters of a length in the Listed race on the July course last month and targets her first Group win at Deauville in the Shadwell Prix de Pomone under Christophe Soumillon.
Haggas will not be in Deauville but is confident that Forever Popular can make an impression.
“It’s a nice race for her. She’s won a Listed race already so we felt there was no point in going backwards. Onwards up upwards,” said Haggas.
“She stays really well and absolutely loves fast ground. I’m not sure she’ll win but we’re hoping for a place.
“We have Christophe booked for the ride and he wins most races he runs in France, so that’s obviously a bonus,” Haggas said of Soumillon, who won this race on Baino Hope 12 months ago.
A competitive race looks likely with black type winners Al Wathna and Highlands Queen also entered. The Yohann Gourraud-trained Highlands Queen last ran in the French Oaks under William Buick in June when he picked up his 30-day ban for interference and causing offence to a steward.
