Left Hand finished second and the fancied Volta was in third to complete a French 1-2-3.

Coolmore raider Ballydoyle was unable to pose a threat after being hampered at the start, while sole British challenger Swiss Range faded in the straight after racing prominently.

Plenty of drama

There was drama about a furlong and a half from home when the Pierre-Charles Boudot-ridden Armande clipped heels with Highlands Queen and came down when in mid-division, while Tierra Del Fuego was pulled up entering the home straight.

After a stewards’ inquiry Highlands Queen was deemed the main perpetrator of the interference and was placed last.

La Cressonniere managed to avoid most of the melee and was produced by Cristian Demuro on the wide outside, and despite drifting right under the whip the daughter of Le Harve was able to get the measure of Left Hand to extend her unbeaten record to five races.

She is incredible

It was Rouget’s second Group 1 winner in three days after his Qemah landed the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The trainer said: “She can do it all. It is an absolute dream because she is just so good.”

A tearful Demuro echoed Rouget’s comments, saying: “She is incredible. I said to myself at one stage we were too far back but I know her by heart and I knew she could do it.”

La Cressonniere is now a general 12-1 shot for the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
