Hamburg: Franz-Günther von Gaertner Gedächtsnisrennen (Hamburger Stutenmeile) (Group 3) 1m, 3yo+ fillies and mares
TOM DASCOMBE’S Excilly (Richard Kingscote) started second favourite for the main event on the opening day of Hamburg’s German Derby meeting, but after a slow start weakened in the straight to finish eighth of the nine runners.
The race went to 7-2 chance Shy Witch (Hans-Jürgen Gröschel/ Ian Ferguson), who thus paid quite a compliment to her German 1,000 Guineas conqueror, Hugo Palmer’s Hawsmoor.
Her trainer, at 73 one of the oldest of his profession in Germany, is enjoying his best ever season, while Scottish-born Ferguson is also having a great run.
“She is definitely one of the best fillies I have ever ridden,” said the jockey afterwards. Gröschel and Ferguson team up again on Sunday with the second favourite Iquitos in the Group Two Grosser Hansa-Preis.
Ferguson grabbed the favoured outside rail early in the straight, and Shy Witch immediately quickened clear to win easily by two and a quarter lengths from the favouroite Nymeria, who kept on well and has now been runner-up on all her four 2016 starts. French challenger Toinette just missed third place by a short head.
