Dortmund: 29th Grosser Preis der Wirtschaft (Group 3) 1m½f 3yo+ 3.40pm BST
THE Grosser Preis der Wirtschaft is usually the first race of the season in which German three-year-olds race against their elders, and today’s field is finely balanced with four members of the Classic generation opposing four older horses.
Best of the three-year-olds should be Jaber Abdullah’s Noor Al Hawa (Andreas Wöhler/ Stephen Hellyn), third in the German 2,000 Guineas last time.
Wöhler’s main jockey Eduardo Pedroza partners the five-year-old Potemkin, one of the stars of 2015 when he won six of his seven starts, but he has not run since taking a Group 3 at Hoppegarten last October.
However another five-year-old looks the one to beat. Wild Chief (Jens Hirschberger/Alexander Pietsch) won a Hanover Group 2 last July and has raced exclusively in top French company since, but his fourth place in the Prix Ganay last month is the best piece of form in the race.
