YORK avoided the worst of the weather on Saturday morning but the going was still changed to good, good to soft in places (from good, good to firm in places) after receiving 3mm of rain.

Conditions deteriorated more markedly at Chester, where the going is now described as soft (from good).

Speaking as she walked the track at 11.30am, Anthea Morshead, assistant clerk of the course at York, said: “We’ve only had 1mm of rain so far and it is currently dry.

“There is the possibility of rain throughout the day and I imagine we will lose the good to firm places from the description. The forecast is improving, though.”

The going at York was changed to good just after midday and was again eased shortly after 1pm to good, good to soft in places.

Chester rain

Chester fared rather worse, however, as the track was hit by more rain than expected.

Clerk of the course Andrew Morris said: “We had 10mm between 8am and 11am, which was more than we were forecast to get. Because we raced yesterday the rain has had more of an impact on the state of the ground and the going has changed to soft.

“The forecast suggests that we should be dry for a few hours and then there is the threat of a shower this afternoon, but hopefully we have already had the heaviest of the rain.”

Fast ground

The Racing Post’s Newmarket correspondent David Milnes reported a ‘very light shower’ in the town at 8am but the going on the July course remains good to firm.

A total of 3mm of water was applied to the course on Friday evening after Alice Springs shattered the course record in the Falmouth Stakes.

Officials at Ascot have also watered and applied 4mm to the whole course after racing on Friday. The going on the straight course is good to firm, while there are good places on the round course.
