Report: Epsom, Saturday

Investec Derby (Group 1) 1m4f, 3yo colts and fillies

A LATE setback threatened to remove Harzand from the field when he spread a plate on the way to the track, but with no serious damage done, the Dermot Weld-trained colt held off favourite US Army Ranger for victory.

Weld and jockey Pat Smullen were winning the race for the first time, as the 13-2 shot took up the running with a furlong left. Ryan Moore was unable to pass on US Army Ranger with stablemate Idaho claiming third.
