HAWKBILL stretched his winning run to six when getting the better of odds-on favourite The Gurkha in a sustained duel through the final two furlongs for the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown.

The two three-year-olds gave no quarter as they put their older rivals in the shade with Time Test back in third and Prince of Wales’s winner My Dream Boat unable to land a blow back in fifth.

William Buick, who starts his 30-day suspension on Sunday, was not to be denied after The Gurkha momentarily looked to be getting the upper hand going to the final furlong as the pair pulled clear.

Switching his whip in a trice Buick got Hawkbill to stretch out as The Gurkha momentarily stuttered 100 yards out and Hawkbill, backed into 6-1 from 8-1 on course, clung on to the half a length lead to give Buick a second win after Nathaniel four years ago.

Time Test, a big market drifter after the ground turned soft and against him, stayed on for third ahead of his pacemaker Countermeasure who held fourth from the disappointing My Dream Boat.
