RACING at Newbury on Friday has survived a surprise morning inspection after nearly three inches of rain fell in 24 hours turning the going heavy from good to firm.
Friday’s fixture had been in jeopardy following 74mm of rain in 24 hours, but officials cleared the track for racing shortly after 7.30am.
Richard Osgood, clerk of the course, said: “We had rain for around an hour at 6.30pm last night and then it rained from 2am right through until now. However there is no more rain forecast.
“We had a look at half seven and the track is okay so we’re on and the going is heavy.”
Asked about racing at the course on Saturday, where the Dubai Duty Free Legacy Cup and Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes are the highlights, Osgood added: “We’ll see how things go with racing today and it’ll follow on tomorrow after that.”
A host of non-runners have been declared at Newbury after the significant going change overnight.
