Undefeated sophomore filly Songbird pleased her trainer Jerry Hollendorfer in her work Saturday morning, according to the Daily Racing Form. The daughter of Medaglia d’Oro broke off five lengths behind a pair of stablemates, split them, and rolled home easily in front, covering seven furlongs in 1:25 4/5 over Santa Anita’s main track.
“I wanted to make sure that in case she wasn’t on the lead, that she knows what to do,” said Hollendorfer. “If she comes out good, which I am sure that she will, we’ll probably be in the race next weekend.”
The race the veteran trainer is referring to is the Grade 2 Summertime Oaks, held next Saturday at Santa Anita. Over 1 1/16 miles, it will be Songbird’s first race since her easy victory in the G1 Santa Anita Oaks on April 9. Following that victory, the filly had an elevated temperature and missed 17 days of training, causing her to skip the Kentucky Oaks.
