Ironicus delivers a course-record performance to win the 2015 Bernard Baruch.
Multiple graded stakes Ironicus continues to draw closer to returning to the races as he recorded his first breeze since June on Monday at Saratoga.
The Daily Racing Form reports that the 5-year-old horse by Distorted Humor breezed three furlongs in 37.98 seconds over the Oklahoma training track. It was Ironicus’ first breeze since finishing second to Flintshire in the G1 Manhattan on June 11.
Trainer Shug McGaughey told the DRF that he had to back off the horse’s training after Ironicus popped a splint.
“I got a little more anxious than I needed to, and I finally had to wait on him,” McGaughey said. “I never had the rider off him. He walked under tack a while.”
McGaughey indicated that he’d like to breeze Ironicus once more at Saratoga – likely next weekend – before shipping back to Belmont Park. McGaughey added that the G1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland is being targeted for Ironicus’ next start.
