Report: Japan, Monday

Morioka: Mile Championship Nambu Hai (Grade 1) 1m, dirt, 3yo+

Favourite Copano Rickey (Akira Murayama/Hironobu Tanabe) kept on well to win his eighth Grade 1.

Second favourite Best Warrior was beaten by one and three-quarter lengths in second, while Hokko Tarumae was three lengths back in third.

Winning rider Tanabe said: “Since Mr. Copa [the owner] called me to ride instead of Yutaka [Take], who was riding Kitasan Black, I have been looking forward to today.

“It was my first ride on him in two years, and he has grown up to be an easy horse to control. I am relieved that I could get a good result.”

Copano Rickey’s next target is the JBC Classic.

Also on Monday

Kyoto: Kyoto Daishoten (Grade 2) 1m4f, turf, 3yo+

Hot favourite Kitasan Black (Hisashi Shimizu/ Yutaka Take) beat Admire Deus by a neck, while second favourite Lovely Day was three-quarters of a length back in third.

Winning rider Take said: “I am relieved. I thought his condition was very good. It was a complete victory though the margin was thin.

“In his remaining two races before retirement, I would like to do my best for the owner Mr. Saburo Kitajima.”

Kitasan Black will run in the Japan Cup and Arima Kinen before retirement.
