Chukyo: Champions Cup (Grade 1) 1m1f, dirt, 3yo+

SOUND TRUE (Noboru Takagi/Takuya Ono) produced a strong late burst to overhaul favourite Awardee and win this prestigious contest formerly known as the Japan Cup Dirt.

Sound True, who won the Grade 1 Tokyo Daishoten last year, was winning at the highest level for the second time in his career. It was also his first win of the season following a series of creditable placed efforts.

The 15-1 shot won the Yen 209,920,000 (£1.45 million) contest by a neck, with a further half-length back to outsider Asukano Roman in third.

“We had to race toward the rear as the pace was fast, but I concentrated on keeping good rhythm,” said winning rider Ono. “I raced him along the rails through the last two corners as planned and was able to find space entering the home stretch.

“The horse seems to be in good form during this time of the year so I am looking forward to defending the title in the year-end Tokyo Daishoten.”

The Tokyo Daishoten takes place at Ohi racecourse between Christmas and the New Year.
