Trainer Jimmy Jerkens is preparing a dual-pronged attack for next Saturday’s Grade 2, $ 500,000 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park. Effinex will turn back in just three weeks after a perplexing sixth-place performance in the Stephen Foster, while last year’s Queen’s Plate winner Shaman Ghost will also step into the ring.
“It doesn’t look like anything’s wrong with him,” Jerkens told the Daily Racing Form of Effinex’s Stephen Foster performance. “He looked better than he did in his life. I can’t understand it. I hope it was an anomaly.”
Effinex is the 122-pound high weight for the Suburban, where he will once again be partnered by Mike Smith, and Shaman Ghost is the second-highest at 120 pounds.
Also pointing to the Suburban are Eagle (119 pounds), Mubtaahij (118), Noble Bird (117), Kid Cruz (117), Samraat (115), and possibly Turco Bravo (116).
