MARK JOHNSTON on Monday nominated the Prix Rothschild at Deauville on July 31 as the likely next target for back-to-form filly Lumiere.
Last year’s Cheveley Park Stakes winner scored impressively in Listed company at Newmarket last week on her first outing since finishing well beaten in the 1,000 Guineas.
“We’d like to go for a Group 1, and a Group 1 against fillies in France sounds ideal,” the trainer said. “But the variable is that the ground could go soft.
“She’s in the Lennox Stakes at Goodwood and we’ll look seriously at that – if we think that’s the best race for her we’d be happy to go there. It’s back at seven furlongs but Joe Fanning’s first comment after the Newmarket race was he wouldn’t be frightened to come back to seven furlongs, she has so much speed.”
Looking further ahead, Johnston added: “She’s not had a busy season and there’s the Sun Chariot and Matron but, again, you’re getting into soft-ground time.
“But we have our feet on the ground, last week’s was a race she needed to win. Thankfully, she didn’t just win it, she won it by six lengths and she won it in a very fast time that suggested she was at least back to her form of last year.
“We’ll see tomorrow what the handicapper does but I’d expect he’ll leave her the same, she had 12lb in hand and won by six lengths.”
