JOSEPH O’BRIEN’S transition to the training ranks got off to a flying start on Monday when his first runner with a licence, Justice Frederick, landed the opener at Gowran Park.

And for good measure the former dual champion Flat jockey in Ireland secured a first winner over jumps 45 minutes later when Mai Fitz Jack made all in the 2m maiden hurdle at Listowel.

Justice Frederick, owned by Maxwell Morris, justified favouritism to score on his second start under the trainer’s younger brother Donnacha, defeating Leo Minor – trained by their dad Aidan – by a length-and-a-half.

The two-year-old, who ran under Aidan O’Brien’s name when third eleven days ago, is entered in the Group 1 Keeneland Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh on August 7.

O’Brien failed to make it two victories from his first two runners when his maiden runner over jumps, Kalopsia, finished seventh in the 2m maiden hurdle for mares at Listowel, having nearly fell at the first hurdle.

However, he didn’t have to wait long for his first victory over jumps as Mai Fitz Jack, partnered by Brian O’Connell, easily landed a first success under rules.

His fourth runner, Song Of Love, finished ninth in the 1m1f handicap at Gowran Park.

He saddles three more runners on Monday – one at Listowel and two in the same race at Gowran Park.
