Report: Newbury, Saturday

Betfred Geoffrey Freer Stakes (Group 3), 1m5 1/2f, 3yo+

KINGS FETE continued his rapid progress when producing an authoritative display from the front to land the Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury, in the process landing successive Group 3 victories.

Having been squeezed out of contention in the closing stages of the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Sir Michael Stoute-trained gelding has gained retribution in devastating style, following up his win in the Betfred Glorious Stakes at Goodwood by justifying even-money favouritism in this five-runner affair.

Ormito came with a surging run in the closing stages as the challenge of Red Cardinal faded, but he could not reach Kings Fete, who had already put the race to bed under Pat Smullen.

The result completed a double for owner Khalid Abdullah, Stoute and Smullen after Partitia’s victory in the two-year-old maiden fillies’ stakes.

Smullen said: “Kings Fete is a nice horse and is starting to put it all together.

“Today wasn’t ideal as we had to make the pace, but he was lovely and relaxed and won well.

“He’d be a better horse with a lead and there’s a lot more to come from him.

“He was always giving the feel it would take a good ‘un to get by him, although the ground was firm enough for him.”
