Lady Eli breezes at Palm Meadows on Feb. 18

Both Eclipse Award finalists and multiple Grade 1 winners, female turf stars Miss Temple City and Lady Eli had their first workouts of 2017 on Saturday. According to bloodhorse.com, the two mares both worked over three furlongs on the Palm Meadows training center turf course. Lady Eli, most recently a heart-wrenching second in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf on Nov. 5, covered the distance in :37.90 for trainer Chad Brown. Her 5-year-old debut could come in the form of Keeneland‘s G1 Coolmore Jenny Wiley Stakes in April.

Miss Temple City worked her three furlongs in a steady :38.65 for trainer Graham Motion, well-restrained in company with another horse. Owner Bob Feld said a Keeneland debut is also on the cards for the 5-year-old daughter of Temple City, and that he planned to nominate to both the Jenny Wiley and the Maker’s 46 Mile. Miss Temple City bested males in the latter race last season, and also captured the race’s twin during the fall meet at Keeneland, the Shadwell Turf Mile, becoming the first female ever to do so.

“We always wanted to run her as a 5-year-old. With that Dynaformer blood, we always figured she’d get better as she got older,” Feld said, indicating that the mare would go on to race at Royal Ascot after her Keeneland debut, as she has the past two years. “I tell people if you look at the results of the Breeders’ Cup Mile (…) we were the best finisher of the 3 and 4-year-olds. And I don’t think that is coincidental. It’s a common thought that the 5-year-old year is a horse’s best year.”
