Lady Shipman Settles, Takes Command In Parx’s Turf Amazon Stakes

Lady Shipman #6 ridden by Joel Rosario won the $ 200,000 Turf Amazon Stakes at Parx Racing

Randall Lowe’s homebred turf sprint star Lady Shipman was the easy winner in Monday’s $ 200,000 Turf Amazon Stakes at Parx, crossing the wire a length in front of her competition. The 4-year-old Midshipman filly settled just off the leader under Joel Rosario, then took control coming for home and raced strongly to the wire to cover five furlongs over the firm turf in :58.06. The Kiaran McLaughlin trainee recorded her 13th lifetime victory with the win.

Lady Shipman broke very sharply under Rosario, immediately holding a half-length advantage over the field of six other female turf sprinters. Your Pace Or Mine rushed up her inside to take over the lead by a half-length before the quarter-mile mark, recording that fraction in :22 4/5. Lady Shipman settled patiently for Rosario, biding her time on the outside until mid-way through the turn when she began to make up ground all on her own on the leader.

Rosario had yet to ask the filly for her best, but Lady Shipman was running so strongly turning for home that she carried herself nearly four-wide into the stretch. That move allowed Your Pace Or Mine to approach her once again along the inside, racing head-and-head for several strides, until Rosario gave Lady Shipman a couple of reminder taps with his stick and she rolled away again. Lady Shipman passed under the wire a length in front of the late-closing Everything Lovely, with Sunnysammi up for third.

Bred in Kentucky by her owner, Lady Shipman was second by a neck in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint to Mongolian Saturday. This year, she has recorded five wins from seven starts, including her first graded stakes win last out in Woodbine’s Royal North. Overall, she boasts a record of 13 wins from 19 starts, with earnings of just under $ 900,000.
