Laurens – Coolmore Fastnet Rock Matron Stakes (2018)

A filly who wears her heart on her sleeve – the admirable Laurens shows no little class and typically guts it out to land the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Fastnet Rock Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on Irish Champions Weekend under jockey Danny Tudhope for trainer Karl Burke and owners John and Jess Dance.

A dramatic contest in which Alpha Centuari took at least one false step at the climax of the race, this proved to be the final racecourse appearance fo the brilliant four-time Group 1 winner, arguably the star of the 2018 Flat Turf season and who had beaten the colts last time out in the Group 1 Prix Jacques Le Marois at Deauville.

While an unfortunate conclusion to the fantastic career of Jessica Harrington’s star filly, Laurens was registering no less than her thjirsd to-level victory this season. Runner-up in the 1000 Guineas, Laurens has now won the Prix Saint-Alary, Prix de Diane (French Oaks) and now the Matron Stakes. Unlike Alpha Centauri, Karl Burke’s filly was also a Group 1 winner as a juvenile.
